If/When extraterrestrials make first contact (publicly that is) - what will their reason be you think? Domination, outreach, education...

Or will we be the first to make contact elsewhere?

I used to think that 1st contact would be a peaceful affair, at least on the part of the aliens!  I'm familiar with how war-like and self-serving humanity can be, and chose to believe that future visitors to Earth might be above all that and put our shortcomings into their proper light.

But what if the selfish urges of humankind are just those of the natural world run through the filter of a conscious mind? For example, animals kill for food, but in people it can often manifest as an urge to kill for pleasure, or for revenge.

If aliens are also part of the nature world, they might share in the same instincts we find here on Earth in ourselves and other animals.  If they do its very possible they could show up wanting something to increase their own security and well-being....like humans wanting resources, or a wolf, sheep... or a spider, blood.
